I’m so excited about today’s new video…ocean importance is truly at the heart of our work + “porpoise.”

It all comes down to THIS:

The ocean is so important to every single living thing on the planet, no matter where you live. And it’s up to us to protect it.

I’ve spent nearly 2 decades sharing the ocean with people of all ages from inland to coastal areas.

It’s inspired me to reach beyond my classroom to create Living Porpoisefully®, ocean children’s books and our online courses for kids with my husband Rett.

Whether I’m teaching in the classroom or making videos + courses to be used around the world, my hope is to inspire love + wonder for the sea that gives us life.

In this energizing 6-minute video, I share:

  • the incredible reasons why the ocean is vital to all life on Earth (we wouldn’t be alive without it)
  • simple + powerful ways we can take action to help protect the ocean (it’s in serious trouble)

Let’s dive in!

It’s important to EVERY single living thing on this planet, wherever you live:

1. Oxygen

Did you know that at least 1 in 2 breaths comes from the ocean?

Over half of the oxygen we breathe comes from the sea and it’s actually sea creatures that make the oxygen.

Those sea creatures are called phytoplankton and they’re tiny plant-like creatures that make food from sunlight energy, and in that process, they make oxygen too!

2. Medicines + Discoveries

Many sea life actually save human lives or make them better through medicines and discoveries. A few examples:

  • Sea sponges are animals and they fight cancer
  • Horseshoe crab blood is amazing and it’s critical in making vaccines like flu shots safe to use
  • Cone snails are used in pain medicines
  • Sea slugs help us understand how our brain works

3. Food

Seafood: lobster, shrimp, salmon, fish n’ chips, clam chowder, tuna fish…

But not just protein: favorite treats have ingredients from the sea in them too.

Stuff in seaweed that we use to make things like puddings, ice cream, and brownies all sorts of goodies — so good. It makes the texture super creamy. Yum!

And after eating all of those goodies, the ocean has us covered. There are ingredients found in toothpaste too that come from the sea.

4. Livable climate

Without the ocean, it would be way too harsh for most life to even survive on this planet.

5. Water cycle

Water in the ocean is the powerhouse of the water cycle. Water in the ocean evaporates, forms clouds, and then forms rain to be delivered all over the globe as fresh water.

6. Transporting

It’s one big ocean that connects us all, making it a great way to move things all around the globe by boat or ship.

7. Fun + Play

The ocean is an amazing place to have an adventure, to go relax, enjoy, put your feet in the sand, go snorkeling with fish, and just explore what this amazing world has to offer.

But the ocean needs our help:

the-ocean-needs-our-help-living-porpoisefully-sea-school

Overfishing, warmer and more acidic waters, plastic pollution and other kinds of pollution all make it very hard for the ocean.

But together, we can all FIX this!

You don’t have to become a marine biologist or live near the coast to help save our oceans. We can all help.

So let’s DO this. Here are some small things that have a BIG impact:

WAYS TO HELP

Sustainable Seafood

When you choose to eat sustainable seafood, it makes a big impact in the health of our ocean.

Sustainable seafood means that it’s caught or farmed in ways that are Earth friendly, and that helps it be around for generations to come.

How do you know if it’s sustainable or not?

The sustainable seafood symbol found on packages when you buy seafood in the store can be a great help, but I also recommend that you dive into other resources:

I recommend this sustainable seafood activity and infographic on our site, and you can also do a browser search “sustainable seafood” to find guides that help you know which kinds of seafood are good choices and which ones to avoid.

More Earth friendly choices

All of these can make a BIG difference:

  1. eco-friendly + sustainable clothing
    • look for recycled fabrics, bamboo, and organic cotton
  2. plant-based + non-toxic cleaning products
  3. organic lawn fertilizers (so nutrients break down before getting into rivers + oceans where it can cause serious imbalances)
  4. switch from plastic bags and bottles to reusable ones
  5. recycle + pick up litter
  6. conserve gas + electricity
  7. support brands + companies that are making a positive impact in our world (why we opened an online eco-boutique)

YOU can help get the word out:

SHARE this video + post to help spread awareness.

And don’t forget the incredible power of learning more + sharing with others.
