As a marine educator with nearly 20 years of teaching kids about the ocean in school and coastal science centers, I’ve seen firsthand how kindness can transform hearts: toward each other, our planet, and even ourselves.
In today’s fast-paced world, fostering kindness in kids is more important than ever. It builds empathy, strengthens communities, and nurtures a love for our environment. What better way to teach kindness than with a splash of ocean fun?
We’re sharing the Make Waves Kindness Challenge, a free, engaging activity designed to spark compassion and connection in kids. Perfect for Kindness Week, Random Acts of Kindness Day, or anytime you want to inspire positive actions, this ocean-themed challenge blends social-emotional learning (SEL) with marine science to make kindness irresistable!
Whether you’re a teacher, parent or homeschooler, this challenge is a simple, impactful way to encourage kids to make a difference.
Why Kindness Matters
Kindness is a superpower that ripples outward, much like waves in the ocean!
Studies show that teaching kids kindness boosts empathy, reduces bullying, and enhances mental well-being. In a world where kids face social pressures and environmental challenges, fostering compassion helps them build stronger relationships and a sense of responsibility for our planet.
As a marine educator, I’ve woven kindness to people, animals, and the environment into this challenge, drawing inspiration from the ocean’s interconnected ecosystems.
Our Make Waves Kindness Challenge uses the playful spirit of ocean animals to make SEL fun and meaningful. It’s a perfect fit for elementary classrooms, homeschool settings, or family activities, encouraging kids to practice kindness through small, achievable actions.

How the Kindness Challenge Works
This challenge is flexible for classrooms, homes, or homeschool settings and aligns with SEL goals to foster compassion, empathy, and environmental stewardship. Here’s how to dive in:
- Print or Download the Challenge Card: Kids mark off kind acts as they complete them, either in paper or digitally. It features ocean animals from A.B. and the 7 Seas, hand-drawn and hand-painted by me and my husband Rett, to inspire ocean love.
- Watch the Video: Show the 3-minute Make Waves Kindness Challenge to introduce the challenge and spark excitement.
- Set Goals & Rewards: For younger kids or those needing smaller milestones, reward a row, column, or diagonal (3 acts) on the bingo card. Older kids can aim to complete all 9 acts within a week or your chosen timeline. Reward ideas include:
- Playing a favorite game (board, sports, or digital). Check out our Jawsome Shark Rescue Game for a fun, cornhole style game!
- Crafting ocean-themed sensory bottles or paper plate animals (try our Virtual Sea School courses for tutorials and ideas!)
- An ocean dance party with our free video!
- Reading A.B. and the 7 Seas together for a literary adventure.
- Encourage & Check In: Guide kids on kind acts like helping a younger child, sharing, or picking up litter to protect ocean habitats. Celebrate their efforts, even beyond the bingo card!
- Celebrate Success: When kids complete the challenge, present them with the certificate (color or coloring sheet) to display proudly.

Why Ocean-Themed Kindness?
At Living Porpoisefully, we believe the ocean teaches us connection: every wave, creature and ecosystem is linked. Kindness works the same way: one small act can create ripples of change. By blending marine science with SEL, we help kids see themselves as part of a bigger world, fostering compassion for others and the environment.
