When I taught marine science, I loved giving my students the chance to swim with manatees, an 8-hour bus ride with a few dozen teenagers. Yikes!
I LOVED seeing the pure joy on their faces when they experienced these gentle giants…and being in the presence of manatees just makes worries seem to fade away.
Keep reading below for a little manatee science + how to help these amazing animals.
Like the shirt I’m wearing? It’s one of my favorites! Our UPF 50+ sun shirts are made with recycled plastic bottles and packaged plastic-free.

Mantatee Awareness Day + Month
We love celebrating manatees any day of the year, but the last Wednesday in March is Manatee Awareness Day, and November is Manatee Awareness Month.
When it starts to cool down, Manatees travel to warmer waters, putting them closer to humans + boat traffic.
Manatees have very little body fat (most of their mass is from their intestines to absorb the sea grass they eat), so they need waters above 68 degrees F to survive.
How to help manatees
If you do encounter a manatee, it’s important to make sure to never chase or harass them. Rett and I are careful to make sure the manatee chooses to be near us.
If you’re a boater, it’s SO important to slow down in manatee zones to avoid striking them with the propeller (it looks like this one has some scars 😥)
You can help manatees wherever you are by reducing fertilizer use, switching to organic fertilizer, or eliminating it all together. This helps reduce pollution that causes algae blooms, which can be harmful to manatees and their food source, sea grass.
It’s a small action that has a big impact!
