Summer is here and that means BBQ season! What better way to spice up Father’s Day for Dad than a mouthwatering spiced barbeque seasoning, in a nautical jar of course? (It’s so good you’ll want to make one for yourself too!)
Now, we don’t claim to be BBQ experts at all, but we’ve got a favorite spice rub that has us making it by the mason jar so it’s ready to use at a moment’s notice. We love it on pork (especially ribs & shoulder), chicken, and sustainable salmon too!
We like it so much that we decided to give it to our amazing dads to spice up their Father’s Day — it makes the perfect homemade gift that can be savored and enjoyed, whether they want to save it for themselves or make for a BBQ get-together.
And, we added a simple nautical touch to the jar to give it those summer coastal vibes that none of us can seem to get enough of! Just a DIY anchor gift tag and navy blue rope. So simple, and we’ll show you how.
Here’s what you’ll need for everything:
- spices (see below for our recipe) + measuring cups/spoons
- bowl to mix spices in
- pint-sized mason jar
- circular brown paper gift tag
- thin blue rope or ribbon (2 feet or so)
- white paint pen
- black pen
- scissors
- clear tape
First, mix the spices in the bowl. Here’s the recipe we use (modified from Alton Brown’s just a tad), and it made enough to give 2 pint-sized mason jar gifts (not all the way filled):
- 1 ¼ cup brown sugar, lightly packed
- 6 tablespoons kosher salt
- 2 tablespoons chili powder
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon Old Bay seasoning
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon ground all spice
- ½ teaspoon ground cloves
- ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
Once mixed, pour into 2 pint-sized mason jars.
Now it’s time for the simple nautical touch. For the circular gift tag, use a white paint pen to make dots and a circle as shown:
Then connect the dots as shown, and add the prongs & crossbar. You can also use the pen to smooth out the bottom of the anchor if you wish:
Once the ink is dry, add the spice name with a pen, and any instructions on the back:
Add the rope, wrapping it and then tying once:
Then tie again:
From here, insert the tag string into the opening in the middle of the tied blue rope, and then tie the tag:
You can either wrap the rope around the back and tie it off, or cut it to leave hang:
You can wrap a small piece of tape around the ends of the rope to keep it from unraveling:
And it’s all set to go to give as a gift (or use for your own BBQ celebrations)!
Don’t be shy with the seasoning now — you’ll want the meat completely covered with it before cooking. Mmmm we’re going to have to whip up another batch just for us now. Enjoy!
